45 inches

45 inches is the name of the blog Jake set up to keep friends & family informed during their trip to France. I remember one of the things that struck me while I was reading it was how unbelievably good the writing was. Most engineers can't write worth a damn (this paragraph is living proof; it has taken me about half an hour). Just another one of Jake's many talents. If you haven't seen it before, check it out. It's a great read with some beautiful photos.

I agree with your observation, Sean. Why I found this especially touching was Jake's continued insistance during the time we worked directly together that he really couldn't write at all, and thus it was good to have me around. When I read Jake's entries from his times overseas, I remember thinking that he was far too modest about his abilities.

When Jake sent the message announcing the blog, I wondered what was significant about "45inches". I guessed wheel diameter. As usual, Jake's response was informative and self deprecating. He loved to talk about cycling.

Yes good guess! It's a gear ratio, of a road bike with 700cc diameter tires (I don't really know why they're called 700cc I admit) and running a gear of 39 teeth front and 27 teeth rear. That's typically the smallest (that is, easiest) gear you can get. And I thought it an appropriate name since I'll be attempting to scale ventoux:

And I will definitely need an easy gear :)

Cheers,
Jake

Greg, then he proceeded to beat me up Mt. Ventoux with Stella attached in a bike carrier!
